Objectives

  • Bridge the gap between our cultures by introducing the Swahili language to people of different cultures.

  • Re-engage first generation Americans of African descent to their background and ancestry history in order to become ambassadors of their culture.

  • Educate the youth on the interconnectedness of our cultures through the culinary science, arts and crafts

  • Provide a platform for American children to learn the Swahili culture in order to encourage unity in diversity

  • Encourage enhancement of self-esteem through public speaking and poetry

  • Help the youth discover their God given talents and provide a platform for the growth of their talents. 

  • Motivate the youth on entrepreneurship and creativity through crafts, music and dance.  

  • Help dispel myths that fuel biases, prejudices and other negative behaviors toward people of color and further create harmony in diversity.

  • Inspire leadership qualities in the youth by embracing responsibilities, partnerships and cultural inclusion.

  • Encourage travelling out of the country and living outside your comfort zone in order to embrace, accept and thrive in a global village.

Curious Child
Level 1Beginner-Primary Class (Ages 6-9)

This class is for student without any knowledge of Swahili. Our primary classes are highly interactive. They engage the senses and imagination and make the kids an important part of the learning process. Little ones sing songs and listen to stories in Swahili as they practice the language. This class is taught through music, song, storytelling and videos. Maximum class size: 6

Beginner Primary Level Ages 5-6 Topics:

  • Greetings & Salutations

  • Vowels in Kiswahili (irabu) a, e, i, o, u

  • Kuhesabu (counting)

  • Body parts

  • Polite requests and orders

  • Places in the home (kitchen, living room, bathroom)

  • Foods & Utensils

  • Songs: Elo elo, Bwana Jua, Mabata Madogo, Jambo Bwana, Kichwa mabega, moja mbili tatu

  • Verbs  in the imperative form

 

Primary Level 1 : Friday 5:15pm-5:45pm EST

Level 1: Complete beginners of language have no foundational knowledge about Kiswahili

Level 2 Junior Beginner Elementary (Ages 6-9)

This class has a huge emphasis on hands-on discovery learning that allows the child to use all their senses to acquire a foreign language. Students learn Swahili through music, reading, dancing, storytelling, conversational practice, and games. Maximum class size: 12

Level 2 Class Topics: Class Scheduled: Friday 5:50pm- 6:20 pm EST

  • Review of level 1 beginner class

  • Greetings & Salutations, Introductions

  • Swahili Alphabets

  • Syllables

  • Pronouns and simple sentences

  • Colors & shapes

  • Body parts

  • More simple sentences

  • M/ Wa class nouns (Huyu/Hawa)

  • Introduction to verbs in Infinitive

  • Introduction to present tense

  • Introduction to  past tense

  • KI/VI class noun (kuna Hiki /Hivi)

  • Introduction to future tense

  • Introduction to past tense

  • Introduction to the negation of verbs

  • Introduction to  Demonstratives 

  • Introduction to possessives

  • Simple dialogue reading and speaking exercises

 

Level 2: Have foundational knowledge of Kiswahili. They can count 1-50

Have a foundational knowledge of alphabet pronunciations in Kiswahili.

Are familiar with some of Kiswahili children songs.

 

Interested Student
Level 3 Junior Intermediate Secondary (Ages 10-13)

This class has a huge emphasis on hands-on discovery learning that allows the child to use all their senses to acquire a foreign language. Students learn Swahili through music, reading, dancing, storytelling, conversational practice, and games. Maximum class size: 15

Level 3 Class Topics: Class Scheduled:  Friday 6:30 pm - 7:00 pm EST

  • Review of level 1 and 2

  • Greetings & Salutations, introductions

  • Swahili Alphabets & Syllables

  • Pronouns and simple sentences

  • Orders and requests

  • Pronouns and simple sentences

  • Present tense sentences with verbs

 

Level 4 Senior Intermediate Secondary  (Ages 14-19)

 

Level 4 Class Topics: Class Scheduled: Friday 7:05 pm-7:35 pm EST

 

  • Review level, 1, 2 and 3

  • Past tense sentences with verbs

  • Negation in the present tense

  • Negation in the past tense

  • Huyu/Hawa & Hiki/Hivi

  • All Noun classes except M/WA

  • Reading and oral practice for both present and past tense

Our adult classes are designed for adults who want to learn how to communicate effectively in  Swahili. Whether you want to travel to an Kiswahili speaking African country, communicate with friends and family or just connect to your past/culture—learning a Swahili allows you to experience a sense of achievement and self-discovery.
